Vacations. We all love a good vacation. Who doesn’t? Have you ever uttered these words when you’re out of town and exercise comes up? “But, I’m on vacation.” I know I have. We all want to relax on vacation but if you want to be healthy, exercise should be part of your daily routine, regardless of where you are.
I just returned from vacation in Florida. I stayed at a condo that didn’t have a fitness facility onsite or one nearby. And, I wanted to make sure I burned some calories while there. For me and my family, ice cream seems to a be a ritual when on vacation, so it was extra important to get a good burn in!
Here are a few workouts I did without any equipment except my Polar Watch and HR monitor. They can be done anywhere. The last one features resistant bands in case you have some to pack on your trip. They are portable and studies show activate muscles better than free weights. Happy Training! And, enjoy your vacation.
You are working at your max for 20 seconds, then rest for 10. Then move on to the next exercise. Repeat each round 4X, then move on to the next round. You can use a regular watch with a timer on it, an app such as Tabata Timer or a Gymboss Timer.
Try to run up the stairs and walk down them. If you are unable to do that, simply walk up and down the stairs for as many times as you can. This normally depends on the number of floors of the building.
When you’re on vacation, find a place you want to go, then walk/run there. In this instance I wanted coffee. Yum! So, I packed the kids up and we headed for the coffee shop 1.5 miles away. I did intervals of walking to a certain landmark, then ran to the next one. I got in a total of 3 miles for the day and a delicious iced coffee!
Resistance bands are easy to use, portable, lightweight and studies have actually shown greater muscle activation using this equipment vs free-weight dumbbells.
